She herself said that her worst acting was in that movie. Although I disagree, her acting in this movie gave me a new respect for what she was capable of.

The movie had some beautiful scenery and was filmed in Canada, Idaho and Los Angeles and was set in the late s.

My overall opinion of this film was that I liked it, except for some excessive river rafting scenes that got a little boring at times.

I give it 4 stars, or a grade of B-. She isn't wearing as much makeup as she did later and uses a more natural voice. She had beautiful skin.

When Marilyn and boyfriend try traveling on the river on a raft, they run into danger and are saved by Mitchum and his son, who are traveling on a horse.

The gambler boyfriend soon steals their only rifle and horse and rushes ahead, leaving the other three unarmed in Indian territory with only the raft to travel faster than walking.

On the way, Marilyn learns much about the type of man Mitchum's character is as he saves their lives repeatedly, though she still hopes to find her boyfriend in town and keep Mitchum from killing him.

You understand the characters. Marilyn was a pretty good actress before the industry decided she should play dummies. I can't completely blame them, because her severe addiction and her later dependence on her acting coach on set made it so hard for her to work.

One person found this helpful. Great old movie with quite a history, both geographically and in the making of the film. This is the river now caled the Salmon River in central Idaho that stopped the Lewis and Clark expedition and caused them to vere many miles off their course and take a more northerly route around this raging river.

This is also the film that caused bad blood between the director and Marilyn Monroe and perhaps the first time she was labeled difficult to work with.

She insisted on bringing her drama coach along to the production set and listened to her coach more than the director on how she delivered her lines.

Her co-star, Robert Mitcham was drinking heavily by this point in his life which also took its tole on the director who didn't want to do the picture in the first place but was under contract to the studio.

Despite all of these challenges for the director it is a film that still holds up today and Miss Monroe is always a complete pleasure to watch.

The two had met on at least one occasion during the mid 's. Marilyn starred as Kay Weston, a struggling saloon singer earning a meager wage in a backwoods mining camp.

Together with rugged homesteader Robert Mitchum and his young son, played by Tommy Rettig, she embarks on a journey by raft down the legendary River of No Return -- a trip made perilous by the presence of Indians, thieves, and white-water rapids.

I loved this movie very much because this is the only movie that Marilyn Monroe was really her true self. She was sensitive, emotional and it did not seen like she was acting, but just being real.

Robert Mitchum Played a great role, especially in the end when he picked up Marilyn and carried her out of a lounge where she was a singing and his son and her were hugging knowing they were going to be together.

The boy needed a mom and Marilyn needed a family, which made me feel emotional and happy at the same time. I recommend this movie for anyone who wants to sit back and be taken on a wonderful journey and feel that you are part of the movie.

So much more enjoyable to watch now. With the beautiful outdoor scenery it would have been a sin to do this in Aspect Ratio.

This is an enjoyable movie to watch. Love Marilyn movies. Can't keep my eyes off the screen, especially when she is in the scene. Not that many of these scenes but overall really nice Blu-ray I think.

I am temporarily listening through just my tv speakers, so no high tech audio system analysis here although it sounded ok to me.

The only extra is a movie trailer. Overall I am really glad I got this real nice copy of a movie I have liked for a very long time now.

No more Pan and scan chaps please. With clear picture and sound and optional English subtitles, plus trailer and stills. I must admit I am a sucker for trailers.

I wish every DVD release could have the trailer included. The film is an exciting western sort of adventure with Mitchum and Monroe on top form Monroe seemed happiest on the location filming, particularly with the very good Tommy Rettig as mitchum's son, in the studio scenes she seems less at ease.

Lots of action and real wild river stuff neatly cut in to the studio back drop shots. Blink and you might miss him.

Calhoun makes a good dastardly villain and the whole film comes in at 90 mins. It unashamedly exploits the natural splendors of mountains, trees, rivers and especially that great force of nature Marilyn Monroe.

It is set in the days of the gold rush in the Canadian North West. It was filmed in the beautiful Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada which helped the impressive cinematography tremendously.

Marilyn Monroe stars as a saloon girl who can sing very nicely indeed. So much so that this film can be considered a musical adventure. Her opening song "One Silver Dollar" is especially enjoyable.

He is extremely good in this raffish role, and tends to steal the limelight from the better known stars. Mitchum rescues the pair from drowning and looks after them.

Later Calhoun in a most ungracious act knocks Mitchum over the head and steals his horse and rifle. This leaves Mitchum, his son and Marilyn in something of a fix as the Indians are on the warpath.

This leaves Mitchum, his son and Marilyn in something of a fix as the Indians are on the warpath. They use a raft to take after Calhoun down the river.

On the way Mitchum quite sensibly lusts after Monroe. What red blooded male wouldn't? Of course he meets up with Calhoun again for a less than friendly chat.

Both Otto Preminger the director and Marilyn Monroe were forced to make this film against their wishes due to contractual obligations.

They both had deep reservations about the script. But despite this the film was a box office hit. Monroe and Preminger fell out during filming and Mitchum took over the communication role.

Mitchum as usual exudes his sleepy brand of masculinity in the film whilst Monroe takes femininity to Mt Everest heights. Her saloon girl dress is certainly an eye opener for the male viewer.

The film has many good moments like the excellent songs and gorgeous cinematography. The rear screen projection and long shots during the river scenes are a bit false at times.

The Indians also seemed to have a strange death wish at times, throwing themselves into the rapids in pursuit of the trio.

But maybe that is understandable with Marilyn on board. It was also quite amusing to see Monroe playing her guitar and using the wrong chords to match the song.

But these are small blemishes that can be partly attributed to the age the film was made in. It is also noteworthy that Mitchum amazingly sings the title song, and that you will not require ear muffs during his rendition.

Overall this film is very entertaining. It is by no means a classic Western but it is extremely watchable for many reasons already mentioned.

The time watching it went very quickly which is always a good sign. Recommended viewing. There are some films that I have seen many, many years ago, but they have remained in my memory because I really enjoyed them back then.

River of No Return is one of many. It is a simple love story: love of a father for his son, love of a show girl with very little in her future for someone that promises her the world, and the love that spings from a trip down the river of no return.

It has adventure, great scenaries, good music, small surprises at each corner and some very good Actors. It is an old film, but the sentiments are forever Young.

I have been waiting for this great film from Robert Mitchum, one of the past great actors who knew how to act!! Need it sooner? Only 20 left in stock - order soon.
