Most people would think fracturing skulls with a wrench to be extreme, but Frank doesn't even muse once on its legitimacy. When it comes to horrifically violent murder, Frank nor Libby seem to even think it remarkable, whereas most people would find it profound, and even in a fantasy universe you need some kind of acknowledgement of that.
Not here. The message at the end appears to be that any level of grotesque violence is valid if one woman Sarah is able to self-actualise and find her happy place in life.
Even Frank doesn't matter, and the trail of dead bodies don't matter, so long as Sarah is happy. So maybe it's a feminist movie then.
That conclusion may be supported by the inclusion of a weird woman-on-man rape scene which apparently is all fine followed by a man-on-woman attempted rape which of course is not.
The movie is well made, and well acted. But what the hell it is about I have no idea. It isn't a deconstruction of superheroes which are so prevalent now as to be tiresome, so that's fine but it's not heroic either, neither is it a comedy even though it uses comedy tropes and degrees of implausibility in its plot, and there's a shocking death at the end whose sole purpose seems to be to get a character out of the way whose plot purpose is done.
I've given it three stars, but the ideal rating would be "baffled shrug". One person found this helpful. Sort by. Top reviews Most recent Top reviews.

Oh dear. A host of big names couldn't save this. I can only assume a lot of favours were called in. The plot revolves around a put-upon nerd deciding to be a superhero.
Sound Familiar? This starts off as a poor Kick Ass rip-off, without the originality or the humour. It even contains a line something like, "With all these comics, why hasn't someone tried to be a superhero themselves?
A bad guy in this case includes someone who might or might not have keyed a car and a guy and his girlfriend who push in to a queue for a film, It then gets dark, and the death toll rises sharply, but everyone except the bad guys lives happily ever after.
There seems to be a fetish in Hollywood for making vigilante films where any sort of death, torture and mutilation is ok, so long as the victim is, or is probably, a bad guy.
I recommend a shower after watching this. Just enjoy it for what it is. Got to the end of the movie and it was like okay so now what?
Was a little unsure to start Left me with mixed feelings but I liked it. A little or a lot less on the violence, blood and gore would probably have made it better.

At the end of this I was left wondering what motivated this movie, or what it was trying to say, since it seemed to be trying to say something. It's not a nerd-becomes-superhero comedy or success fantasy, for instance.
There doesn't seem to be a reason within the story for why Frank and Libby are both psychotically violent, they just are.
