It would be a very difficult feat but the world needs these stories that deal profoundly with war, religion, genocide, creation, race, culture, family, love, sacrifice, morality, connection and soul.

I actually saw the movie before reading the book, but I think this is one of the best adaptations of a book I've ever seen.

To be sure, liberties were taken with the science and the plot, dumbing it down a bit to make it more suitable for a general audience.

Also, there was the fundamental need to condense things into a 2-hour movie and, hence, there simply wasn't enough time to develop certain aspects of the plot.

Instantaneous communication via ansible was alluded to but not explained, and the relativistic effects of near-light-speed travel were simply ignored.

The critical importance of timing of the attack on the Formic home world was never explained. How simple it would have been to explain that the earth fleet had been en-route for decades and the slow-down from light-speed travel couldn't be altered.

The fleet was destined to arrive on a given date, regardless, hence then need for Ender to be ready so quickly. Having Ender travel to a world near the Formic home planet implied faster-than-light travel, making the rest of the plot fall apart.

I understand the need to reduce Ender's 6 years of training into one year, and the need for him to physically meet the hive queen, but why mess with General Relativity to get Ender closer to the Formic home world?

Sticking to a base carved out of Eros, a well-known solar asteroid, would have made more sense. Still, I think this was an outstanding movie.

The portrayal of Battle School was amazing and the all-star cast was superbly chosen. Already an experienced actor with the title role in Hugo to his credit, Asa Butterfield was absolutely perfect as Ender.

In the course of two hours, this movie did an excellent job of keeping the spirit of the book, maintaining the key plot elements and presenting them, if anything, in a more cohesive manner than in the book.

The extra features include not one but two audio commentaries - one by the director and one by the producers. I found myself wanting to watch them both, for an additional 2 hours each, when I rarely bother with the commentary tracks.

The other features, showing how they filmed the zero-G sequences and so on, were excellent, although there were a few obvious violations of Newton's First Law.

I highly recommend this film adaptation. I have been a Orson Scott Card fan for over 20 years. And although Children of the Mind is my favorite in the series, I was super excited for this movie to come out.

However, I definitely have mixed feelings about this movie. The movie felt rushed. He was already a smart ass at the beginning.

I was just let down. I wanted to love this and hoped for a series like The Hunger Games, or something. That being said, my boyfriend who never read the books thought it was kinda cool.

I've not read the book in years so have to look at the movie as a "stand alone". I thought the special effects were fabulous and the battle scenes were very well done.

All in all, I would say the younger actors did a great job considering how much of it was done with a green screen or is it a blue screen now?

The most negative thing I can say is that they characterizations were not well done - considering how "special" Ender was, there was not much we learnt about him and what we did was mainly through Harrison Ford's viewpoint.

I also feel Viola Davis was underused - fabulous actress but never really understood why she was in the movie.
