Camera operation, done by von Trier himself, is handheld, giving the film a documentary ambiance; and there are other great shots, such as the Google maps view of the streets.
The lighting is theatrical-like, there are no golden glows that dominate mainstream films. A question might be that if everything is filmed so theatrically, why did von Trier bother to make a film?
Why not just go to the west end of London and put on a play? It is just so different. So much so that the magic of film encapsulates you, and you forget the studio location, theatre set design, the spotlights, the stage clothing and all the other theatrical aspects and follow the story to its conclusion.
Dogville is a masterclass in scriptwriting, acting and directing. It swims against the current to display that normality can, and should, be broken.
A brilliant film. Of course I did go on to see it later. If film is about ideas, then this film generates lots. He could just have filmed a play with minimal sets, but that would be too theatrical, enclosed.
This, shot in a kind of big warehouse, strips the narrative down to its essential story. The camera shoots most people in close-ups, or follows them.
This is about a small village set in the Rockies,high above a valley and neighbouring town. It could be anywhere. A tethered dog is more an idea than the real thing.
Both give career-best performances. She plays Grace,a young , vulnerable woman on the run from some criminals, who are pursuing her. They visit the town, but the townsfolk have agreed to warn her so she can hide in a mineshaft.
They have a bell-ringer who rings the bell before anybody strange approaches the town. The narrative of the film has a John Hurt voiceover giving it a fable-like quality.
Tom introduces Grace to all the townsfolk one by one, he gives her a form of patronage and protection.
They vote to allow her to stay, and Tom suggests she offers to do work for them or do little jobs to earn her way.
After a while the strange set seems to disappear as you relate to the people and the story. Grace is a kind of Christ-like figure, gentle, kind and generous.
Tom is caring and sets high ideals of fellowship. Grace helps the villagers with their chores, whether that be keeping them company, looking after the kids, picking apples in the orchard, keeping the gooseberry bushes well tended.
We get a feeling of the passing day ,light changes and changing seasons. The police call now and again to put up posters about the missing Grace; these change over time to her being wanted for armed robbery.
Symbolical of her worth. They decide to punish her by making her drag a massive iron wheel chained to her leg. She still attempts to work, dragging it everywhere, tired out.
Tom still wishing to have carnal relations alienates the ideals they shared. He's hypocritical. They return in force with guns, the leader is her dad James Caan.
Americas of the mind or cultural oppression generally? This film is a brilliant study on the darker side of human nature.
Most films have clearly defined 'good guys' and 'bad guys' but as we know circumstances can bring out the worst in good people and vice versa.
In Dogville, even the most phosophical character proves to be a coward in the name of self-preservation and Grace, the film's victim, finally snaps, providing a shocking conclusion similar to the central character in Von Trier's Europa when lured by power.
It is the more subtle touches that stick in my mind, such as the Latin inscription above the mine no sooner said than done and the references to changes in light - the inexplicable way situations in life can change for no apparent reason.
I also think it's a good analogy of village life - nice on the surface, but a whole lot of venom awaits anybody who challenges the status quo.
Like many of Von Trier's films the pace builds to a nightmarish crescendo. A whole book could be written analysing this film's message and one of the characters was even attempting to do this.
Self referencing, tragic, in fact all the director's traits that you know and love. One person found this helpful. I am a latecomer to this film ten years or more since it did the rounds.
Now having watched it I find myself still thinking over it many days after. The Dogville small town USA community, early 20th century is uniquely presented as like an early rehearsal stage set with all walls absent but indicated by chalk lines and words on the stage floor and with the 4th wall breached by the English voice of John Hurt as narrator.
With a town name like Dogville you expect a dog or two from the get go and indeed there is one "Moses" but he is physically absent represented only by another chalk outline and the word "DOG" and a recorded bark.
I could not help thinking of snarling teeth at this point. Eventually all the missing elements you expect in a film get mentally filled in.
This story could actually be anywhere, an African village, a rain forrest tribe, an Eskimo community or an English village at any time in history, reason enough perhaps scenery is not included.
Bargains are struck to allow Grace to stay. From quid pro quo growing to tooth for a tooth Waltons go bad is essentially what the film is about.
People making free choices and you hating them for they ones they actually make. People react in extremes to this film like the good folk of Dogville to the arrival of Grace , to the point of hate, stating this is in fact not a film, not a movie, because it does not conform.
Movies apparently should not be missing scenery, soundtracks or dogs especially if dog is in the title. Movies should not poke you in the eye Brechtian style "hey you are watching a movie, its not reality, think" or be divided into chapters with spoiler titles.
This is challenging cinema, art house, holding the mirror up kind of stuff. If you don't like what you see, its not them it is you.
And if you like your Kidman looking "classic Kidman" its all here achieved using her own stylists. Lots of other familiar faces, lots of "hey!
It should be stated this film contains rape and murder scenes. Dogville Dir. I expect extremity, I anticipate something a bit okay, a lot different and I don't reckon upon coming away with a smile on my face.
I'm happy to say that Dogville delivered on all three counts. Their simple existence is shattered by the arrival of Grace Nicole Kidman , a fragile and if the DVD blurb is to be believed beautiful fugitive pursued by gangsters and in need of a place to seek refuge.
Championed by Tom Edison Jr. She quickly establishes herself as a valued member of their close-knit society, but with the search for her intensifying, her acceptance is short-lived and the residents of Dogville soon reveal their true colours.
I am almost invariably drawn to characters who are seen as outsiders, so therefore I was onside with Grace from the off. In a bit of an anomaly, Kidman gives an astonishing leading performance and the rejection, exploitation and manipulation she endures is horrific and crushing.
I am wary of divulging specific plot details, but one character's betrayal in particular left me distraught. This is a film that will seriously challenge your faith in the goodness of humanity I'm just glad I watched with a plentiful supply of chocolate to cushion the pain as its powerful portrayal of human nature is vicious, visceral and violent.
The fact that evil manifests itself in such an ordinary, mundane setting we have gooseberry bushes and squirrels darting between children's legs for Heaven's sake serves to make the film all the more disturbing.
John Hurt's characteristic smooth-as-silk narration, which reassuringly pervades throughout, lulls the viewer into a state of false security.
The use of an omniscient storyteller creates the impression that the film is a kind of perverse fairy-tale, a slice of whispered folklore passed down through the generations, the legend of Dogville with its grotesque monsters and its damsel in distress.
I would have rated the film highly regardless, but the icing on the already delicious cake comes in the form of how Von Trier chooses to present his narrative visually.
The action takes place almost on a soundstage, a blackboard on which the actors can perform. The story-space is heavily implied and realised largely through crude chalked outlines, perhaps a metaphor for the primitive and rudimentary nature of both the town and its inhabitants.
For example, the gooseberry bush is a basic-level helpfully labelled black-and-white abstract squiggle. It is originally quite an odd concept to adjust to, but once you get used to seeing and hearing character's knock on invisible doors, the minimalistic Brechtian-inspired theatre staging feels completely unique.
With the boat already pushed out so far the fact that Tom is constantly engaged in self-reflection parallels the desired effect that Brecht strove to provoke in his audiences , part of me wishes Von Trier had gone all the way and completely embraced his key influence and had character's break down the fourth wall and directly engage with us as the audience.
In short, this is a long, demanding film about the arrogance of forgiveness. But it's well worth it. Nine-and-a-half kernels of popcorn out of ten.
