Jake claims that Jessie assaulted him, stole money and fled. Terry is reluctant to take on the job, but needs the money and knows Wise is capable of blackmailing him.
Terry gets in touch with Jessie's mother Jane Greer , ostensibly to find out where Jessie can be found, but mainly to convince Mrs.
Wyler and her business partner Ben Caxton Richard Widmark to reinstate him on the team. Wyler makes clear that she has no interest in his football career.
She's willing to pay him more than Jake would if he will find Jessie for her. Beyond that, she has no use for him.
Hank Sully Alex Karras , the team's trainer, strongly advises Terry to stay away from Jake and offers to help Terry get a coaching job.
Terry is convinced his days as a player are not over and instead decides to work for Jake to tide him over until the next season, when he can try to continue his playing career.
Terry finds Jessie living in Cozumel , Mexico. He makes multiple attempts to approach Jessie, but she rebuffs him, aware that he must have been sent by either Jake or her mother.
Terry tires of pursuing a spoiled brat and packs to leave, but Jessie appreciates that he hasn't revealed her whereabouts and invites him to see where she is staying.
They become lovers. Terry confides the leverage Jake has over him is the knowledge that Terry once shaved points in an important football game after he had fallen into debt.
Terry and Jessie remain happily together for a few weeks, with Terry continuing to tell Jake he's been unsuccessful in locating her. Sully is sent by Jake to investigate.
He catches the lovers alone at the ruins of Chichen Itza. Wielding a gun, Sully demands that Terry turn over the girl and warns him she's "no good.
A struggle between the men ensues and Jessie fatally shoots Sully. She wants to flee, as the two will be unable to offer an explanation that will allow them to avoid jail.
But when Terry refuses, insisting that the two cannot just run away from the matter, Jessie abandons him. After disposing of Sully's body, Terry returns to Los Angeles and finds to his astonishment that Jessie has returned to Jake.

When an injury-riddled body causes pro football player Terry Brogan Jeff Bridges to be cut by his team, Jake Wise James Woods , a shady gambler friend, hires him to locate his spoiled, erratic girlfriend Jessie Rachel Ward.
Terry's attempt to glean Jessie's whereabouts from the girl's coldly aristocratic mother Jane Greer leads to a lucrative counteroffer to keep Jessie away from Jake if he finds her.
After refusing, Terry heads for scenic Cozumel, where he eventually runs down the stunning young woman. A mutual attraction quickly develops and the pair are less than eager to return to California.
Painfully, Terry tells Jessie about his involvement in a betting scandal which has put him under Jake's control. Meanwhile Jake, who is angered by the delay, senses that something is going on, and sends Terry's conditioning coach, Sully Alex Karras , to find the couple.
When he finally locates them, sweatily making love in a Mayan temple, tragedy ensues, spinning the ill-fated Terry into a world of boundless deceit and corruption.

Apr 23, A stylish romantic thriller starring the handsome and charismatic Jeff Bridges in a superb performance, as a unemployed and disgruntled ex-football player who accepts a job from a shady nightclub owner and ex-teammate, played by James Woods in brilliantly sleazy performance to find his girlfriend played beautifully by the stunning Rachel Ward who's run off to Mexico, but the plot thickens when he falls in love with her.
Skillfully directed by Taylor Hackford, great sensual love scenes, a hair-rasing race along Sunset Boulevard and a haunting Oscar nominated title song by Phil Collins are some of the film's highlights.

We have a little bit of everything thrown in here, betrayal, deceit, bribery, greed, crime, and some steamy sex scenes and it seems only Terry and Jessie's passion for each other is pure.
I wouldn't spoil it but you just gotta love the ending when reality kicks in. The scenery in this movie is beautiful as is the magnificent theme song of Phil Collins.

There is a lot of plot in this movie -- probably too much. The best thing to do is to accept the plot, and then disregard it, and pay attention to the scenes of passion.
They really work. Roger Ebert. Against All Odds has its moments, but too often the film plays less like an official remake of Out of the Past and more like an unofficial prequel to Tequila Sunrise.

More and more, Terry finds himself trapped in an intricate web of passion, intrigue, and murder, as Jessie starts to feel the burden of choice in this dangerous love triangle.

The film instead focuses on gorgeous, sunny locations like Mexico and the finer locations of L. Jeff Bridges stars as a pro L. Upset because he has some good years left in him, he attempts to sue the team to no avail.
Broke and looking for a job, a shady past friend played by James Woods shows up with a job offer: find his girlfriend who split on him and headed to Mexico.
This girlfriend also happens to be the daughter of the woman who owns the L. When he decides he needs a vacation and the money, he takes Woods up on his offer.
After a couple days of useless searching, he finally finds her The femme fatale is played by Rachel Ward, a hot commodity back then, coming off of The Thornbirds.
A spoiled rich princess-type, she eventually succumbs to him and the following scenes are some of the most beautiful sequences put on film.
The only commercial movie that has filmed scenes in the gorgeous ancient ruins of Chichen Itza and Tulum, these sequences make the film.
The sex scene is one of the best I've seen, really putting a passion on the screen without becoming too Unfortunately, from here, the film plummets into a convuluted mess trying to deal with issues that seem out of place with the film: The L.
I think the film is definitely worth a watch for the first two-thirds alone. Also, dvd fans are encouraged to listen to the cast commentary.
One of the better commentaries I've heard, there is a lot of great anecdotes from a rare track by Jeff Bridges and James Woods.
The two leads really seem to come off as real friends joking and ribbing each other, unlike some of the stuffy professional actor commentaries that are usually the case.

He is bitter toward her, but Jake maintains a hold over him with the point-shaving incident, as well as Sully's sudden disappearance.
Terry is sent to break into the office of Kirsch Saul Rubinek , the team's corrupt lawyer, who is also involved in Jake's gambling operation.
Terry's mission is to retrieve Kirsch's files, which implicate everyone involved. Terry breaks into the office only to find Kirsch dead.
A security guard has been hired to kill Kirsch and make it look like Terry committed the murder. Terry fights off the security guard, then hides Kirsch's body.
He finds a local bar frequented by Kirsch's secretary, Edie Swoosie Kurtz , where he tells her what has happened and that she too is in danger.
Edie tells him about a secret box that contains the information to bring down the entire syndicate and local politicians. They return to the office to retrieve the box, where a fight occurs with another two guards, but again Terry escapes, this time with Edie and the files.
Jessie remains at Jake's side but claims to be still in love with Terry. She knows that Jake is behind Kirsch's murder and informs Caxton, telling him that Jake has been handling bets on his old football team using information he's been given by Sully and Kirsch.
What she doesn't know is that Caxton is actually Jake's boss at the syndicate. Caxton takes charge. He arranges to meet Terry at the site of a new construction project that he and Mrs.
Wyler are backing. Terry is able to disarm Caxton's armed henchman Tommy Dorian Harewood. He says his price for turning over the files is that Caxton must take down Jake.
Caxton indicates he is receptive to that idea, whereupon Jake pulls his own gun and threatens to kill Jessie, forcing Terry to drop his weapon.
While the men have their attention focused on each other, Jessie retrieves the dropped gun and shoots Jake. Having killed both Jake and Sully, she must agree to terms set by Caxton to avoid going to jail.
