It's a deeply textual text, and I think even experimental theater would struggle to dramatize it effectively. That said, it's an entertaining read that you can polish off in less than an hour, and who would ever pass up an hour with Anne Carson?

View 1 comment. Anne Carson's typical ancient Greek excellence gets a contemporary update as the worlds of Helen of Troy and Marilyn Monroe collide like clouds.

There's valor, there's mid-century flair, and there's also commentary on the failure of both worlds to grant these glamorous women full humanity.

Carson stirs up form in this short drama, sometimes packaging criticism into vocab lessons, questions and activities delivered between scenes.

The book's sparseness suggests it probably functions better as the Anne Carson's typical ancient Greek excellence gets a contemporary update as the worlds of Helen of Troy and Marilyn Monroe collide like clouds.

The book's sparseness suggests it probably functions better as the performance piece it is intended to be, rather than a standalone text, but it's still an enjoyable read.

Apr 13, Eve added it. Saw this performed at the Shed. I suspect this reads much better as a book than as seen live I could not sustain the focus necessary to follow the ruminations and after the first half hour, it became very hard to stay awake.

May 16, John rated it really liked it Shelves: drama. Sounds crazy but it works. A very short read less than one hour.

Jun 27, mikhaela rated it really liked it Shelves: poetry , plays , wow. Aug 15, Emma rated it it was amazing.

Well, welcome to Public Relations. That was all a hoax. I am a Canadian male forty years of age in defiance of God! My passion for poetry began to diminish in my twenties.

My suspicion is that post-secondary education had something to do with that. Defective drunkard that I was, a nefarious little fucker well used to hearing that he would never amount to anything and had to cheat on his diploma exams in math and one of your sciences merely to graduate from high school , it pleased me very much to discover that I write essays of high quality and parse dense Continental theory without terribly much challenge.

I knew Carson, knew her poetry, had read dispersed samplings thereof, was fond of the stuff. But for a long time it was not really in my wheelhouse.

Or so I thought. Not a book of poetry, naturally, but rather a work of dulcet essayistic scholarship, Classics-steeped, Grecophilic, its foremost sacrosanct dears Sappho first and Socrates second.

The book is a masterpiece the sweet loving of which invites precious little bitterness. You can find the performance I watched over at Vimeo where it remains to delight and enthrall future supplicants or happeners upon.

The back of the New Directions volume tells us that this production featured the contributions of actor Ben Whishaw who once played Keats for Jane Campion!

The sections written in prose and those written in verse obviously present as at least minimally differentiated, and certainly here again an element or elements of counterpoint are operative, but there can be no mistaking that the work as composite achievement exists in a univocal if thoroughly dynamic sort of a register, the poet and the Classicists not segmented but joining together in the execution of each bravura stroke.

Who actually went to Troy? Norma Jeane Baker? Not exactly. This cloud indicates not only opacity, obliquity, obfuscation of identity and of form , but also flux, shiftiness, matters upon which it would doubtlessly be challenging to get a firm handle.

Norma Jeane Baker of Troy is married to a man named Arthur. Husband is introduced thusly: My good husband Arthur, king of Sparta and New York, dear honourable, old-fashioned Arthur who led an army to Troy to win me back.

Hopefully by this point most readers are aware that Norma Jeane Baker was once the name of the iconic mid-century American movie star Marilyn Monroe who married her final husband, renowned playwright Arthur Miller, in Marilyn Monroe was in fact born Norma Jeane Mortenson, the Baker surname introduced with the entrance of an abusive stepfather, chattel-style.

Marilyn Monroe has taken on a life in the world of letters along with the quasi-immortality she enjoys in our image culture. Helen and Marilyn traditionally occupy distinctive and very separate timelines, but you fold those timelines and you get a whole bunch of the more things change the more they stay the same, much of this revolving around the subjection of women and the sacrifice of female idols taken by force.

Carson literally calls to account or has proposed in advance to call to account the male version of certain kinds of event.

What does the phallocentric or phallogocentric outlook look out like? It is martial, is is tribal, it is cuckoo for property. You almost sense you might be able to bring the whole thing down with its own glutted weight, jiu jitsu the shitshow.

Norma Jeane is an idol-icon, a Helen, a thing worthy of possession, a thing the worthiest would imagine they ought to possess, but, as established, a cloud you cannot satisfactorily wrangle.

Much antic comedy is made of this. Is that how they want it? What do men want? A bit of strange. But I digress. Our sense has a tendency to distill back to animalistic non-sense.

Sense is already its own non-sense, its own absurdity, and we are already talking jiu jitsu. Systems fall on their own foundations.

Later, Episode Five, we will be provided with intimations of 9. Theatre, ritual. Sunset Boulevard, on its own account, takes a tsunami.

If Norma Jeane belongs principally to the playlet proper, Helen figures more centrally in the History Lessons.

This is the Helen both of Homer and Euripides, territory in which Carson is singularly at home. The opening episode of the playlet concludes with a stage direction: Norma Jeane takes out her knitting.

Male castration is of course part of the jiu jitsu that might take down systems with the elements immanent to those systems.

The wound is also of course castration. Freud saw the threat of castration as a source of boyish agitation, Lacan, his successor and something of a crypto-Buddhist , went further, suggesting a universal experience of lack the denial or suppression of which traditional phallic recourse produces its own spasms of destructive impotence.

Jiu jitsu here too: just wait it out, let impotence squash the Arthurs as it cannot help but do. Then there is good old time, the ultimate jiu jitsu master.

How about our experts in thermodynamics. They call it entropy, and one of the things it means is tendency over time toward the loss of net organization within all systems.

The 20th century was rich in entropy literature. Much of this literature involved the loss of net organization of history itself, a posteriori, sequence and record collapsing into themselves like a tower pancaking.

Carson is more unmistakably an actual anarchist than is Barthelme. Check out that History Lesson on concubines. Dirt confuses categories and mixes up form.

And it gets worse. Carson returns a couple times to Persephone, a woman made famous in large part on account of her having been raped.

May we not perhaps begin to grow convinced that Persephone will have her revenge? She might not even have to lift a finger! You may trust me or you may not.

But the conclusion I present is not Public Relations. That being said, if fake news is fake news and this is the Nile but I am a liar, the telling can still be used to traffic in dynamite.

Irony—all the glory unto she—can be out and about in her full peacock array and yet speak all the names of God verbatim.

Clever Not about either Troy or about Norma Jeanne, but really about both. A kind of feminist treatment of what motivates men—it ends up being a waste.

Aug 16, Phillip rated it really liked it Shelves: drama. Carson creates an analogy between Marilyn Monroe and Helen of Troy, blending them as though they're the same figure occupying a kind of transhistorical space.

The play depends on the myths of both Helen and Marilyn, both of whom occupy this kind of larger than life space as legendary beauties, and both of whom had relatively terrible home lives with bad husbands and public scandals.

What I find difficult to understand about this play is how it would work in performance. The monologue portions performed by Marilyn I understand, but there are periodic interludes with lessons on the history of war or, perhaps more accurately, on cultural phenomenon surrounding warfare.

I don't know how these would be staged. I can imagine a couple of different ways, but nothing that would really be effective on a stage. May 20, Iriririries Gu rated it it was amazing.

Honestly, I did not finish reading the play, but in theatre, it turned out to be so brilliant and way beyond my expectation. Dougherty was thrilled.

His love wasn't reciprocated. I was dying of boredom. In , Dougherty became a Merchant Marine. Within a year, he was shipped out to the Pacific, leaving his wife behind.

Bored, alone, and struggling to make ends meet, she started working in a factory building drone aircraft for the Army. However, she was discovered at the factory by a photographer named David Conover.

Soon, she quit her job and started modeling for the Blue Book Model Agency, posing in sensual pin-up photos that infuriated her husband.

In , she moved on with her career and left her husband behind. She divorced Dougherty, dyed her hair blonde, and soon changed her named to Marilyn Monroe.

She would marry celebrities, have affairs with presidents, and leave her mark on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She would become a legend unlike any the world has seen — and leave behind a life as a whole other person with a whole other name.

The s had been the heyday for actresses who were perceived as tough and smart—such as Katharine Hepburn and Barbara Stanwyck —who had appealed to women-dominated audiences during the war years.

From the beginning, Monroe played a significant part in the creation of her public image, and towards the end of her career exerted almost full control over it.

In her films, Monroe usually played "the girl", who is defined solely by her gender. In press stories, Monroe was portrayed as the embodiment of the American Dream , a girl who had risen from a miserable childhood to Hollywood stardom.

Although Monroe's screen persona as a dim-witted but sexually attractive blonde was a carefully crafted act, audiences and film critics believed it to be her real personality.

This became an obstacle when she wanted to pursue other kinds of roles, or to be respected as a businesswoman.

The biggest myth is that she was dumb. The second is that she was fragile. The third is that she couldn't act. She was far from dumb, although she was not formally educated, and she was very sensitive about that.

But she was very smart indeed—and very tough. She had to be both to beat the Hollywood studio system in the s.

Such a good actress that no one now believes she was anything but what she portrayed on screen. Biographer Lois Banner has written that Monroe often subtly parodied her status as a sex symbol in her films and public appearances, [] and that "the 'Marilyn Monroe' character she created was a brilliant archetype, who stands between Mae West and Madonna in the tradition of twentieth-century gender tricksters.

According to Dyer, Monroe became "virtually a household name for sex" in the s and "her image has to be situated in the flux of ideas about morality and sexuality that characterised the Fifties in America", such as Freudian ideas about sex, the Kinsey report , and Betty Friedan 's The Feminine Mystique Dyer has also argued that Monroe's blonde hair became her defining feature because it made her "racially unambiguous" and exclusively white just as the civil rights movement was beginning, and that she should be seen as emblematic of racism in twentieth-century popular culture.

Monroe was perceived as a specifically American star, "a national institution as well known as hot dogs, apple pie, or baseball" according to Photoplay.

If America was to export the democracy of glamour into post-war, impoverished Europe, the movies could be its shop window Marilyn Monroe, with her all American attributes and streamlined sexuality, came to epitomise in a single image this complex interface of the economic, the political, and the erotic.

By the mid s, she stood for a brand of classless glamour, available to anyone using American cosmetics, nylons and peroxide.

Twentieth Century-Fox further profited from Monroe's popularity by cultivating several lookalike actresses, such as Jayne Mansfield and Sheree North.

The Smithsonian Institution has included her on their list of " Most Significant Americans of All Time", [] and both Variety and VH1 have placed her in the top ten in their rankings of the greatest popular culture icons of the twentieth century.

Hundreds of books have been written about Monroe. She has been the subject of films, plays, operas, and songs, and has influenced artists and entertainers such as Andy Warhol and Madonna.

Monroe's enduring popularity is linked to her conflicted public image. Due to the contrast between her stardom and troubled private life, Monroe is closely linked to broader discussions about modern phenomena such as mass media, fame, and consumer culture.

Monroe remains a cultural icon, but critics are divided on her legacy as an actress. David Thomson called her body of work "insubstantial" [] and Pauline Kael wrote that she could not act, but rather "used her lack of an actress's skills to amuse the public.

She had the wit or crassness or desperation to turn cheesecake into acting—and vice versa; she did what others had the 'good taste' not to do".
