Probabilmente il gruppo di maggior successo emerso dal post-punk sono gli U2. Il termine alternative venne coniato negli anni ottanta per descrivere quelle band che si ispiravano al punk rock che facevano parte di etichette indipendenti e non commerciali.
Un'altra forza predominante fu quella del noise rock dei Sonic Youth , dei Big Black , dei Butthole Surfers , e di tanti altri.
