Though many may find this film dark and depressing I won't argue , I think it's strong acting and excellent direction make it well worth seeing.

Both characters are emulating the powerful, hyper-masculine bodies displayed in rap videos, most notably in the way they dress; both Frank and Tonny wear uniforms that consist of track suits, hoodies, sneakers, and gold chains, cultural signifiers that are heavily associated with hip hop and gangsta rap.

It is important that they do so, as to lack both power and respect would mean that they lack masculinity. Frank and Tonny have also appropriated aspects of heavy metal, punk, and Neo-Nazi cultures as well, particularly in the style of music they listen to.

The soundtrack to their lives is one of thrashing guitars, pounding drums, and wailing vocals. Much like gangsta culture, heavy metal and punk in particular are associated with traditionally masculine aspects such as virility, violence, and aggression Fig.

However, both genres are also strongly tied to whiteness. Thus, whether consciously or unconsciously, Frank and Tonny are responding to the crisis of masculinity — in which white, middle class, heterosexual maleness was decentered by the advancement of movements such as feminism, racial equality, and homosexual activisim — by using these signifiers to assert their whiteness, and offset the black masculinities they have adopted.

At the same time, however, Frank and Tonny have remixed all of these cultural signifiers into a wholly new type of hybridized identity, but one that is nevertheless unmistakably representative of traditional notions of masculinity.

Frank in particular must construct this performative identity, since he does not conform to traditional notions of hegemonic masculinity.

He is out of shape and somewhat incompetent, and as a result he lacks any sort of real strength or power. This is why he is not respected by either the laconic but ruthless Serbian drug lord Milo, or his hulking enforcer, Radovan.

Therefore Frank looks to Milo for approval, and Milo in turn fills a fatherly role, providing Frank with an allowance for the work he does and punishing him when he makes a mistake.

When he does not get it, Frank is forced to try harder. At times he indulges in very non-traditional acts of maleness, all of which shed light upon the scared and confused little boy that is hiding behind the mask of manliness, as well as the sensitive, non-traditional man that is compensating for his lack of power and respect.

For instance, toward the beginning of the film, Frank brings Vic a large stuffed animal of the kind that might be won at a fair or a carnival Fig.

This represents something of a time-honored romantic gesture, and it indicates that Frank does have romantic feelings for Vic and that he at least cares for her.

This runs contrary to traditional notions of masculinity, which posit that men must repress their emotions in order to remain distant and stoic.

Indeed, according to traditional notions of masculinity, any display of feeling other than anger, especially one of tenderness, simply serves to emasculate the man, and undermines his masculinity altogether.

Thus, by displaying his feelings for Vic, Frank only serves to reinforce the idea that he does not actually embody traditional masculinity, but instead that his manliness is simply a performance.

However, before giving Vic the gift, Frank and Tonny do spend some time kicking it up the stairs and down the hall of the apartment complex, possibly signifying their contempt for this type of sensitive masculinity.

Similarly, when Frank and Tonny are rebuffed by the women at the bar, they immediately kiss one another in a rather brazen display of homosexuality Fig.

This serves to almost totally undermine the traditionally masculine identities they have constructed for themselves, as this type of openly homosexual display between heterosexual men is condemned within the context of traditional masculinity.

However, in some ways, it also serves to emphasize their masculinity as it is simply a strengthening of the homosocial bond that exists between them.

Within the context of traditional masculinity, men are meant to remain apart from women except when engaging in the act of sex, and thus men are expected to forge strong homosocial bonds with other heterosexual men.

The fact that they are laughing indicates that the kiss shared by Frank and Tonny is obviously not meant as a serious romantic gesture between the two men, but is meant to undermine the disappointment of being rejected by diffusing the situation with humor.

They are engaging in the kiss as a way of mocking the idea of both homosexuality and non-traditional masculinity, while at the same time intensifying the homosocial bond they have forged.

This becomes more obvious when they engage in a bout of play fighting shortly at the diner later. At first the conflict appears to be antagonistic, but it quickly becomes evident that it is just another way to establish and reinforce their close friendship.

According to traditional notions of masculinity, men are meant to express their emotions only through the act of violence, and therefore, violence is simply another way for men to express their feelings for one another.

This is due to the fact that Frank is simply a boy pretending to be a man, and is not yet equipped to deal with these new responsibilities. Frank is arrested when trying to sell drugs to group of shady Germans, and for the first time ever, Frank is forced to take responsibility for his actions.

At the same time Frank is completely stripped of the illusion of power and respect he has cultivated by appropriating a masculine identity.

Frank runs from the cops, but his inability to lose them is the first indication that he is out of shape, and that he does not conform to the masculine ideal of being muscular, powerful, and strong.

Frank even laments his lack of physical prowess right before the police fish him out of the lake he has leaped into in a last ditch effort to elude them, in a tacit acknowledgment that he does not actually conform to traditional notions of masculinity.

Thus, his cloak of masculinity has been removed, and he has been revealed to be nothing more than a reckless little boy who does not seriously consider the consequences of his actions.

The second and most devastating crack comes when Frank is faced with yet another adult responsibility. In this case, he must pay back the large amount of money he owes to Milo.

After Frank is released from jail, he is picked up Radovan, and taken to the restaurant Milo uses as a front for his illicit activities.
