A work like his solo piano piece Der Bote isn't "happy" in Machaut 's sense; its presence does not sit ceremonious around a text, or act as acoustic architecture in solid unending duration.

But nor is it quite Schubert 's sadness: It does not seep like warm blood from the emoting confessor and has nothing of the ardent melancholic intimacy of an actual nineteenth century score, it isn't "alive" with speech.

Rather, Der Bote is a kind of mask of sadness, the painstakingly re-created surface of a condition whose abysmal depth is its only aspect.

The work was written in memory of Silvestrov 's wife, Larysa Bondarenko, who passed away in ; her death was a terrible blow to the composer, whose career of dedications and memorials should never have had to include one to her.

Nevertheless, Silvestrov composed one quickly and it is one of his stranger, more remote scores -- elliptical even for him -- as if great pain had forced his music to escape into a new, historical level.

But it is encased in that gentle disenfranchisement so native to Silvestrov : gestures hang over just a bit too long or bleed into each other just enough so as to betray their illusive status -- they unfold like recollection of experience rather than experience.

The vastest grief needs poverty more than wealth for its expression; it is the very inability to give good grief, to find an expressive port for one's sorrow, that reveals its otherwise unthinkable aspect.

Perhaps this explains the cavernous darkness that encroaches around this little, light-filled score; its gossamer lines and music-box accompaniment are the negative face of Machaut 's happiness, not a presence but a presented absence, "like the pencil-drawing of a plan or sketch draws and joins together what is held apart in separation.
